Hi there! My name is Maya Nelson-Rowntree, known in the artistic realm as Maya Jade. I’m a Jamaican-Canadian artist who has called Vancouver home for the past five years. Growing up, I moved around quite a bit, but music has always been my constant. It’s in these musical spaces where I’ve encountered incredible individuals—friends, mentors, and classmates—who have fueled my passion for diving deeper into the world of music.
Artistic Inspiration:
One of my greatest inspirations is the incomparable Sade. Her sultry vocals and captivating presence have left an indelible mark on me since childhood. Drawing from her enchanting melodies and elegant stage persona, I aim to infuse my music with a similar allure. Moreover, I find inspiration in various facets of life—films, conversations, literature, and personal experiences. It’s through these diverse influences that I strive to create art that’s deeply personal and authentically vulnerable.
Favorite Projects:
One of my cherished works is a song titled “All I Need,” inspired by Kali Uchis, which I’m excited to unveil soon. This track delves into the quest for closure following the end of a relationship. I take immense pride in its intricate melodies, layered vocals, and uptempo beats. Experimenting with different vocal tones and arrangements allowed me to push my creative boundaries, resulting in a piece I can’t wait to share with the world.
Community Engagement:
I actively participate in initiatives like Couchjams and Phantom Sounds, both of which are pivotal in nurturing Vancouver’s burgeoning BIPOC music scene. Couchjams provides platforms for open mics and showcases exclusively for BIPOC artists, while Phantom Sounds curates RnB and Hip Hop events. These endeavors not only foster community growth but also offer invaluable opportunities for artists like myself to showcase our talents and connect with audiences.
Challenges and Growth:
One of the most daunting challenges I grapple with is self-doubt, particularly when performing or releasing new music. Overcoming this hurdle requires constant reminders that imperfection is inherent to human expression. Embracing the notion that there’s no such thing as a “perfect” performance or song has been pivotal in bolstering my confidence and allowing my creativity to flourish. As I navigate the delicate balance between pursuing my artistic passions and meeting practical needs, I prioritize carving out spaces where I feel valued and validated as an artist.
Future Goals:
In the short term, I’m eager to further immerse myself in Vancouver’s vibrant black/BIPOC music community while continuing to explore and refine my creative vision.
In the long term, I aspire to push the boundaries of my artistry by embracing new sounds, lyrical themes, and vocal techniques. Collaborating with fellow musicians whose work resonates with me on a profound level is undoubtedly a dream I’m fervently pursuing.

To fellow aspiring artists, I offer this advice: Seek out spaces that not only accommodate but celebrate your unique artistic voice. I’ve encountered environments where my musical style wasn’t fully embraced, but persevering led me to discover venues and communities where I felt truly seen and valued. Surround yourself with individuals who uplift and empower you, and never underestimate the transformative power of staying true to your authentic self.
