Hey there! I’m Builley Emma, a Canadian born to South Sudanese immigrant parents, pronouncing my name as (Bull-lay E-ma). Currently, I’m navigating the business world as a student at Capilano University. Let me take you on a stroll through the unexpected turns that led me to the exciting world of modeling.
Modeling Unveiled:
Modeling was never in my playbook initially. Despite constant nudges to give it a shot, sports stole the spotlight of my interests. It wasn’t until December 2022 that my friend Cynthia Ouchi, fueled by a passion for modeling, convinced me to tag along to an open call. Keep in mind that her enthusiasm overshadowed mine. We went in for some fun with zero expectations. To my surprise, a week later, an email popped into my inbox congratulating me on signing up with Model Made Management. It was a mix of shock and joy. Since then, I’ve graced the runways of Vancouver Fashion Week (VFW) for two seasons, collaborated with amazing photographers, and gained invaluable insights from my agent, Amrit Sandu. Here’s to what 2024 holds in the modeling realm!
My Musical Roots:
Now, let’s rewind to my roots in music. Singing was a childhood dream overshadowed by extreme shyness. Despite my introverted nature, I found solace in singing activities, choirs at church and school, and even talent shows. However, my shyness led me to hide my talent, pretending to be a “bad” singer when caught in the act.
Inspiration Struck:
Artistic inspiration hit me like a wave, and one figure stands out—Raven-Symoné. I was hooked on “That’s So Raven” during my childhood, witnessing her excel in acting, singing, and dancing. Raven-Symoné, as the first Black figure I regularly watched on TV during the “Golden” Disney era, left an indelible mark on my aspirations and creative pursuits. And the fashion? Don’t get me started! My singing style is a mishmash of genres influenced by diverse music across generations, especially falling into the Neo-soul/R&B category.
Style Evolution:
Modeling transformed not just my career but my style too. It’s become more versatile, blending modern elements with an old-school flair. Vibrant yet smooth tones, a play of bold and natural colors characterize my aesthetic. Interestingly, my style often syncs with my hairstyle, shaping the overall look.
Cherished Moments:
Among my favorite projects is my first talent show in grade 2. Despite being scared, I belted out “Baby It’s You” by JOJO. To this day, that performance holds a special place in my heart, with memories of my grade 2 teacher’s joy, my older brother’s pride, and my mother’s tears of joy.
Challenges and Growth:
Insecurity was a hurdle in my early artistic journey. Childhood scars from rough play left me fearing judgment. Comparison with other girls my age fueled feelings of not being “cute” or “pretty” enough. Overcoming these insecurities has been a journey, emphasizing the importance of self-acceptance and embracing my unique qualities. My commitment to growth involves discipline and dedication to perfecting my craft aspiring for mastery.
Artistic Rituals:
Before any big event, my routine involves prayer—a grounding practice for calmness in high-pressure situations. Reinforcing practiced skills through positive self-affirmations contributes to mental preparation and resilience.
Local Roots and Community Bonds:
While local collaborations are yet to materialize, I stress the importance of engaging with local artists. Active participation in local events enriches my artistic journey and strengthens connections within the modeling and singing communities. Recognizing the significance of roots in shaping identity, I encourage representing where you come from and being the voice for those unheard.
Connecting with the Community:
Actively connecting with the local community, I seek opportunities and participate in events. Initially engaged through my agency, I now look forward to connecting with other singers and expanding my network within the local singing community. Connecting with diverse individuals in modeling and singing enhances overall engagement and collaboration within the local community.
Future Dreams:
As for future goals, it’s a bit hazy right now, but the overarching one is to excel in modeling and singing, with the ultimate dream of gracing the runways of New York Fashion Week.
Advice to Fellow Artists:
As I mentioned earlier, become a passenger, a prince or princess, in the vehicle that Christ is driving. You’re not boring; you just haven’t tapped into your hidden talents yet. Manage your time wisely and be intentional in everything you do or with everyone you encounter. Consistency and dedication should be your middle name.
