Stepping into Calabash Bistro on December 21, 2023, for the Open Mic Grooves event felt like entering a secret realm beneath the lively streets of East Downtown Vancouver. The venue’s warmth enveloped me, drawing me further into its depths. Little did I anticipate the hidden gem awaiting in the form of a basement venue, a sanctuary for art and soulful melodies.

Descending the stairs transformed the ambiance. Local artworks adorned the walls, their colours dancing in the soft glow of lights illuminating the stage.

Patiently waiting for the artists of the night to weave their magic, the stage became the focal point of the dimly lit space. The audience comprised a diverse mix of cultures—blacks, Hispanics, Caucasians—coming together for a shared love of music.

The evening commenced with a captivating performance by Azzy & TRS. Their act painted the stage with the essence of sisterhood and the sweet nostalgia of old-school love. TRS later took the solo spotlight, leaving the audience in awe with a tune that lingered like a gentle breeze.

Paul and Keira graced the stage, crafting a musical masterpiece with their rendition of Asa’s “Jailer.” Paul’s guitar skills were enchanting, perfectly complementing the soulful vocals that filled the room.

Noah took the stage, rocking a bass guitar with a voice so solemn it resonated with the depths of the audience’s souls. A slow song added balance, showcasing the diversity of talents that marked the night.

Etchos, with an angelic voice, enchanted the audience with a rendition of Adele’s “All I Ask.” Each note seemed to float in the air, leaving a trail of emotion in its wake.

Builley followed, smoothly playing with different chords as they sang “Killing Me Softly,” infusing the night with a soulful vibe.

Brenan’s solo on the drums, accompanied by a melodica piano sidekick, added a unique dimension to the night. The beat echoed through the basement, creating a rhythm that resonated with every heartbeat in the room.

Then came the artist of the night, xen_xen, serenading the audience with the smooth melody of “Is This Love.” The song wrapped around the venue like a warm blanket, becoming the night’s anthem.

Naughty Val closed the set, pouring his heart into a song about the unconditional love he longed for. As his voice filled the room, you could feel the raw emotion, a perfect ending to a night filled with musical journeys.

Approaching the intermission, the basement of Calabash Bistro echoed with the lingering tunes of the night, promising more enchanting moments to come. The Open Mic Grooves event had unfolded like a musical journey, each artist contributing unique colours to a night celebrating diversity, talent, and the power of shared melodies.

Make sure to come for their next event on the 18th of January, 2024. More details to follow on Open Mic Grooves Instagram page and our website
